Lee Thistlethwaite archive: concert programmes collection
Description
Lee Thistlethwaite (1885 – 1973) was a cotton trader and manufacturer based in Manchester and semi-professional baritone and oboist, most active in the 1920s and 30s. Founder of the Burnley Operatic Society.
The collection of approximately 200 programmes was donated to the University Library by his son, Sir Frank Thistlethwaite, inaugural Vice-Chancellor of the University of East Anglia and Chair of the Friends of the University Library. It forms part of a larger archive which includes correspondence, newspaper cuttings, contracts, production notes and photographs.
The programmes date from 1910 to 1961 and include Thistlethwaite’s song recital and operatic engagements with companies such as Carl Rosa, British National Opera Company, the Manchester Beecham Chorus and the Burnley Operatic Society and his engagements as oboe/oboe d’amore/bass oboe with the Hallé Orchestra under Sir Hamilton Harty, the Manchester Orchestral Society under Archie Camden, and performances for Clef Club concerts in Burnley and the surrounding area.
There are two boxes, the first contains programmes from 1910 - 1930, the second programmes from 1931 - 1961 and the nine souvenir programmes for Burnley Operatic Society.
