Robin Orr Archive: concert programme collection
Description
Robin Orr (1909 – 2006) was born in Scotland. He attended Pembroke College, Cambridge as organ scholar after studying at the Royal College of Music in London. After the war he directed the choir at St John’s College, Cambridge before joining the Music Faculty as a Lecturer. In 1956 he became Professor of Music at Glasgow University, where he also helped found Scottish Opera. He returned to Cambridge as Professor in 1965 where he remained until his retirement in 1976. His musical compositions include three operas, three symphonies, orchestral and choral music, chamber music, and songs. His service and anthems are still to be heard at St John’s and King’s College Chapels.

This collection of 267 programmes spanning 1928 – 1989 forms part of the archive of manuscripts, letters and other papers donated to Cambridge University Library by Mrs Doris Orr in 2009 to mark the composer’s centenary and the 800th anniversary of the University of Cambridge. The programmes include concerts of performances of works by Robin Orr, in some of which he either conducted or performed, and concerts given by Robin Orr as either performer or conductor of works by other composers.
