Collection Description

Collection Title
Record of the Musical Union (1845-1881)
A collection of programmes of concerts organised by the Musical Union. The programmes date from 1845 to 1881. The collection contains five bound volumes of programmes and ca. 38 loose programmes. Part of the collection consists of reports – known as the "Record of the Musical Union" and edited by John Ella – which include the annual report for the union. The programmes are for concerts that took place in London, in the Willis’s Rooms (1845 – 1857) and then St. James's Hall (1858 – 1881). There are also a few programmes from concerts in the Hanover Square Rooms for part of the 1858 season. A substantial number of programmes in the collection are from concerts which formed a series "Musical Union Matinee".

The programmes are arranged chronologically in two sequences: there is one chronological sequence for the bound volumes, and another for the loose programmes.
