Collection Description

Collection Title
McCann Collection: United Kingdom (1952)
A collection of two boxes of programmes from the McCann collection, from 1952. The collection contains programmes from concerts given in the United Kingdom. The programmes were collected by the concert agent Norman McCann (1920-1999).

The majority of the collection consists of programmes from London (particularly the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Albert Hall), and various venues in Edinburgh. The contents of the collection are as follows:

London (including Greater London):
Royal Festival Hall – 57 programmes
These include three programmes from “Mysore Concerts”, which were organised by the Philharmonic Concert Society.

Royal Albert Hall – 21 programmes; 1 prospectus
These include material from the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts, summer season (6 programmes; 1 prospectus) as well as one programme from the winter season of Promenade Concerts.

There are four prospectuses entitled “Guide to London Orchestral and Choral Concerts”.

Usher Hall – 25 programmes; 1 prospectus
The majority (23) of these programmes are from concerts given by the Scottish National Orchestra.

Edinburgh Festival – 8 programmes; 1 prospectus

Other Edinburgh venues:
National Gallery of Scotland (3); Reid School of Music (6).

In addition, there is a programme from a concert organised by the Edinburgh University Musical Society Choir where the venue has not been specified.

There is a festival programme for the Aldeburgh Festival.

The collection contains a programme from the venue “Station Theatre”. The programme is from a concert organised by the Royal Air Force College, Cranwell, so it is likely that the venue is located within the college or surrounding area. There is a programme from a concert organised by the “City of Birmingham”, a flier from concerts organised by the Huddersfield Choral Society, and a programme from a concert organised by “The Central Music Library & Westminster Public Libraries”. In all cases, the exact venue has not been specified. There are six other programmes from concerts where either the venue has not been specified, or the concert forms part of a multi-venue tour.
