Collection Title
McCann Collection: United Kingdom (1942)
A collection of one box of programmes from the McCann collection, from 1942. The collection contains programmes from concerts given in the United Kingdom. The programmes were collected by the concert agent Norman McCann (1920-1999).

The contents of the collection are as follows:

Royal Albert Hall – 43 programmes; 2 prospectuses
There are 9 programmes and two prospectuses from the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts.

National Gallery – 26 programmes; 2 press-cuttings
The programmes are from “National Gallery Concerts”, the war-time concert series organised by Myra Hess. There are also two press-cuttings, which contain reviews of National Gallery Concerts.

Other London venues:
Cambridge Theatre (2); Central Hall, Westminster; Lloyd Park Pavilion, Walthamstow; Richmond Theatre; Rudolf Steiner Hall (2); Orpheum, Golders Green (6); Coliseum; Wigmore Hall; Hippodrome, Golders Green.

Town Hall, Birmingham – 22 programmes
The majority (18) of these programmes are from concerts given by the City of Birmingham Orchestra.

St. Mary’s Cathedral; St. George’s Church, West Edinburgh; Usher Hall (4); Freemason’s Hall; National Gallery of Scotland (3); Music Class Room, Park Place (3); Lauriston Church, Edinburgh.

Other provincial venues:
Pier Pavilion, Llandudno (3); Royal Court Theatre, Liverpool (2); Town Hall, Walsall; Town Hall, Watford (6); New Town Hall, Worthing (2); Regal Cinema, Salisbury; St. Paul’s Church, Chippenham; Park Hall Cinema, Cardiff (2); Savoy Cinema Theatre, Kettering; City Hall, Sheffield (3); De Montford Hall, Leicester; Albert Hall, Nottingham (3); Winter Gardens Pavilion, Weston-super-Mare (2); Public Hall, Ipswich; Olympia, Reading; Pavilion, Torquay; Crane Theatre, Liverpool; St. Peter’s Hall, Bournemouth; Colston Hall, Bristol (3); Grand Theatre, Derby; Central Hall, Derby (2); Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford; Pavilion, Bournemouth (2); City Hall, Newcastle.

There is a prospectus from the North East Regional Orchestra: the advertised concerts took place at City Hall and the Odeon Theatre. There are programmes from concerts given as part of the Guildford Orchestral Subscription Concerts and the Bradford Music Club: these programmes do not specify concert venues. There is also a programme from “Polytechnic Hall”, where the geographic location is not specified. However, other evidence on the programme suggests the venue is located in or around Woolwich. Similarly, there is a programme from an unspecified venue, where iconographic and other evidence suggests the concert took place in or around the tower or Winter Gardens in Blackpool. There are three programmes where venue is not specified on the programme, but tickets loosely inserted in the programmes state that the venue of the concert was City Hall, Newcastle. There is also another programme where the venue is unspecified.
