Collection Description

Collection Title
McCann Collection: United Kingdom (1923)
A collection of one box from the McCann collection, from 1923. The collection contains programmes from concerts given in the United Kingdom. The programmes were collected by the concert agent Norman McCann (1920-1999).

The contents of the collection are as follows:

Queen's Hall – 16 programmes; 1 prospectus
The collection includes two programmes and one prospectus from the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts.

Royal Albert Hall – 14 programmes
The collection includes three programmes from the series “Special Sunday Concerts”, four programmes from the series “Saturday Night ‘Proms’” and seven programmes from the series “London Ballad Concerts”.

Other London venues:
Kensington Town Hall; Wigmore Hall (2); Leighton House, Holland Park Road (2); Central Hall, Westminster; Morely College (2); Baptist Tabernacle, Greenleaf Road, Walthamstow; Town Hall, Twickenham; St. John's Hall, Richmond; Aeolian Hall (4 programmes, plus press cuttings); Chelsea Town Hall; St. Angela's High School, Forest Gate; Old Vic.

Usher Hall – 12 programmes
The majority of these programmes (11) are from concerts given as part of the concert series "Paterson's Concerts". These were orchestral concerts given by the Scottish Orchestra.

Other Edinburgh venues:
Freemasons' Hall, George Street, Edinburgh;

Pier Pavilion – 14 programmes
The programmes relate to concerts given by the orchestra entitled "Pier Company's Orchestra".

Other provincial venues:
County Secondary School, Woking; Devonshire Park Winter Garden, Eastbourne (2); Free Trade Hall; Temperance Hall, Birmingham; St. Mary's Hall, Coventry; Palace, Woking (1 programme, plus press cutting); Queen's Hall, Wigan; Colston Hall, Bristol (3); Grove Lane Assembly Rooms, Handsworth; Victoria Hall, Bolton (2); Bristol Cathedral; Victoria Hall, Sheffield; Theatre Royal, Birmingham; Central Hall, Birmingham; St. Andrew's Hall, Glasgow.

In addition, there is a prospectus for various events organised by the British Music Centre, Birmingham Branch: these took place in the Small Lecture Theatre, Midland Institute, and the Mecca Café, Waterloo Street.

There is a programme from a concert organised by the Ibis Musical Society: the venue of the concert is stated as "in the hall". There are two programmes from concerts that took place in "Queen's College". One of these gives the address as "Paradise" Street, and hence it is likely that the Queen's College in question is the institution which was based in Birmingham. There is also a brochure for the "Midland Competition Festival". The venue is described as "Town Hall", and it is probable that the location was the Town Hall in Birmingham. There are seven programmes from unspecified venues or programmes from multi-venue tours.
