Collection Title
London: Theatre Royal, Drury Lane (1817-)
Description
A collection of programmes from the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. The programmes date from 1817, with a significant amount of other nineteenth-century material. There are six programmes from 1817 to 1829, which are concert bills. These are from mixed genre concerts and performances of oratorios. The remainder of the nineteenth century material is chiefly from opera performances, with a few plays and concerts. A large part of the collection dates from the 1910s, and is chiefly from performances of ballet and opera. There are programmes from Sir Joseph Beecham’s Grand Season of Russian opera and ballet form 1913 and 1914; these include significant performances of Russian opera, for example Chaliapine singing Boris Godonov. There are also programmes from Sir Thomas Beecham’s Grand Season of Opera in English; these date from 1917, 1918 and 1919 seasons. There is a significant amount of programmes from concerts in the 1940s. A lot of these are from orchestral concerts given by the Royal Philharmonic orchestra. Some of these concerts were organised by the Thomas Beecham Concerts Society; in addition, some of these programmes were also part of the Beecham-Mozart Festival. There are a number of programmes in the collection from performances of musicals, in particular from the 1940s and 1950s. These include musicals such as Oklahoma (1949) and South Pacific (1951). There are ten programmes from opera performances in 1968 and 1969; these were given by the English Opera Company.
