Collection Description

Collection Title
Henry Wood: Queen's Hall, Symphony Concerts (1897-1927) [ADD]
Description
A collection of 31 volumes of programmes from concerts given at Queen's Hall, 1897 to 1927. The majority of programmes are from "Symphony Concerts". The collection includes programmes from the first to thirtieth seasons of concerts.

The majority of seasons of Symphony Concerts ran from October through to April/May/June. However, there are only programmes from January to June in the first volume (1897) in this collection. The concerts took place on Saturday afternoons. The concerts were weekly in the first years of the series, and then became fortnightly events.

The Symphony Concerts were usually conducted by Henry Wood, and featured the Queen’s Hall Orchestra (subsequently the New Queen’s Hall Orchestra). Occasionally, composers conducted performances of their own works.

The collection also contains isolated examples of "Queen's Hall Symphony Concerts" given outside of London. For example, there is a programme from a concert given at The Dome, Brighton.

The collection includes a significant amount of programmes from concerts given at the Queen’s Hall, which were not part of the "Symphony Concerts" series. Some of these programmes are from isolated concerts, such as special concerts for Good Friday, memorial concerts, children’s Christmas concerts and New Year's day concerts. These usually featured the Queen's Hall Orchestra, conducted by Wood. There are also programmes from recitals by "star" soloists such as Busoni (for instance, in the 1900-1901 volume) and Kreisler (for instance, in the 1910-1911 volume). The collection also contains programmes from other series of concerts given at the Queen's Hall. For example, there are programmes from the series "Ysaye Concerts" in some of the earliest volumes: these featured the violinist accompanied by instrumentalists or the Queen's Hall Orchestra. The earliest volumes also feature a few series of Wagner concerts.

The majority of non-Symphony Concerts programmes took place in the Queen’s Hall, but there are a few programmes from other venues: for instance, there is a programme from a "Queen's Hall Concert", given in the Town Hall, Leeds.

There are two copies of the volume for 1898-1899. These are near duplicates, with one copy containing one extra programme.

The programmes contain analytical programme notes with musical examples. In addition, there are portraits of performers, including Henry Wood.
