Collection Description

Collection Title
English Provinces: Maidstone (1842-1991)
A collection of eight programmes and prospectuses from Maidstone, from 1842 to 1991.

The earliest programme in the collection is from a concert given in the Corn Exchange Concert Room on 23 August 1842. The concert was entitled "Signor Rubini's Farewell Concert", and included a mixture of various vocal items including extracts from Stabat Mater (Rossini) as well as a horn interlude between concert parts. The soloists were as follows: Signora Pacini; Mademoiselle Ostergaard; Signor Nigri; Signor Puzzi and Signor Rubini. The collection includes as a photostat of the programme, alongside the original item.

The remainder of the collection dates from 1959 onwards. The collection includes items from the following organisations and festivals: Maidstone Orchestral Society; Maidstone Opera Group; Leeds Castle Festival; Sutton Valence Music Society. The majority of items do not specify a venue or are from events which took place in multiple venues, though programmes from Leeds Castle are an exception to this.
