Collection Description

Collection Title
English Provinces: High Wycombe (1889-1951)
A collection of eight programmes and prospectuses from High Wycombe. There are programmes from 1889 through to 1951, though a number of items are undated and some of these are likely to be from concerts held after 1951.

The earliest programme in the collection is from a concert held in the Town Hall, on 6 May 1889. The programme is from a mixed concert of solo vocal items, choruses and part-songs interspersed with solo pianoforte items. The concert also featured a performance of the cantata "On Shore & Sea" (Sullivan). Though the programme states that this was the first performance of the work, it is likely to be referring to the first performance by this group as external resources reveal that the premiere of the work was given in the Royal Albert Hall in 1871.

The rest of the collection includes programmes from the following venues: Town Hall; Parish Church; Wycombe Abbey School; Wycombe Swan, Town Hall Theatre. There is also a prospectus from the High Wycombe Musical Festival.
