Description
A collection of programmes and wordbooks for the first three Wednesday Evening Concerts, given at Exeter Hall, London on 26 October and 2 and 9 November 1853.

These were two-part performances of vocal and choral music, with orchestral overtures/symphonies in each part and occasional instrumental solos. The first two concerts included an extended work in the first act (recorded below).

All programmes carry an introductory announcement about the series and include a List of the Band, led by Mr Thirwall and conducted by Mr Benedict. Those for the second and third concerts conclude with reproductions of press reports on the previous performance in the series.

26 October 1853: Miss Dolby, Miss Rebecca Issacs, Mademoiselle Norie, Miss Cicely Nott, Miss Poole and Miss Stabbach; Mr Benson, Mr Lawler and Master de Sola (vocal) with Miss Arabella Goddard (piano), including Felicien David, The Desert and, in part 2, the first performance of Mendelssohn, Lieder ohne Worte for solo trombone (Signor Cioffe, trombone).

2 November 1853: Miss Birch, Miss Dolby, Miss Poole, Miss Rebecca Issacs, Miss Fanny Ternan, Mr Augustus Braham, Mr Charles Cotton and Mr Lawler (vocal) with Mademoielle Coulon (piano), including Mendelssohn, Music from 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.

9 November 1853: Miss Grace Alleyne, Miss Birch, Miss Rebecca Issacs, the Misses Jolly, Mademoiselle Norie, Miss Thirwall, Mr Augustus Braham, Mr Charles Cotton and Mr Wallworth (vocal), with Mademoiselle Wilhemenie Clauss (piano) and Herr Vogel (viol d’Amore).
