Collection Description

Collection Title
University of North Carolina, Department of Music (1952-60)
Unique Identifier
7901.e.19.
Description
A collection of programmes for concerts and recitals given by the Music Department of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill from 1952-3 and 1957-60, bound in four volumes.

No venue is cited in relation to the 1957-8 series. Unless otherwise stated, all other concerts took place in the Hill Music Hall of the University of North Carolina.

All programmes provide detailed information regarding the performers involved and, where appropriate, include full lists of the choral and/or instrumental ensembles.

Unless otherwise stated below, the University Orchestra was conducted by Earl Slocum (with the assistance of Edgar Alden) and the University String Quartet consisted of Edgar Alden, Jean Heard, Dorothy Alden and Mary Gray Clarke.

Each volume begins with a list of concert series given under the auspices of other University organizations and which are not, therefore, documented in detail in this volume. These are listed in […] below. Except in the first volume, lists of the members of the University Administration and the Department of Music are also included at this point.

Each volume includes sequences of programmes of the following sorts:
1. Main concert series/Tuesday Evening Series: performances ranging from solo and duet recitals through chamber concerts to choral and orchestral performances.
2. Student Recital Series. These concerts were of two types: those given by the students of the Department of Music and those by students in the Preparatory Division. Concerts of both sorts included a large number of different performers, meaning that it has been possible to list only the dates of their occurrence in the entry below.
3. Band concerts.

With the exception of the first, each volume also includes programmes relating to a series of performances referred to as Les Petites Musicales. These were sponsored by the Graham Memorial Student Union, directed by Howard Henry and held in the Graham Memorial Lounge
