Collection Description

Collection Title
Sterndale Bennett collection: Analytical Programmes Vol. 1 (1875-99)
A miscellaneous collection of programmes for performances given by the Philharmonic Society between 1875 and 1899 at St. James's Hall (to 1887) and at the Queen's Hall, Langham Place (1897-99), bound chronologically as a single volume.

Also bound in this volume are three documents containing the Music of the Favourite Melodies for Mozart, Don Giovanni, Gounod, Faust and Haydn, The Creation, published by W. S. Davidson and Co/The Music-Publishing Company, London.

All programmes carry Analytical and Historical Note (with words and musical examples). With the exception of the concerts given in 1880, all programmes also include a list of the orchestral ensemble and provide detailed records of the Members, Associates and other officers of the Philharmonic Society. From December 1897, many programmes provide a List of Newly Introduced Works.

These concerts were conducted by Mr W. G. Cusins (1875–80), Mr John Francis Barnett (1884), Arthur Sullivan (1885–87) and Alexander Mackenzie (1897–99). Many concerts included works being given for the first time and/or works conducted by their own composers.
