Description
A collection of programmes and wordbooks for five concerts given at the Steinway Hall, Lower Seymour Street, London in 1885, 1890 and 1891.
The vocal recitals were all two-part performances containing a significant amount of music by English composers. That on 21 May 1891 included the first performances of a number of pieces by Lawrence Kellie.
27 October and 24 November 1885: Herr Peiniger’s Recitals of Violin and Concerted String Music nos.1 and 3, with Mrs Dyke and Miss Mary Bliss (vocal), M. Saint-Seans (piano), Mr Fuller Maitland (harpsichord), Miss Emily Shinner and Herr Peiniger (solo violins), Herr Peiniger and Messrs Wallace, Cave and Percy Ould (violins), Messrs Channell and Ellis Roberts (violas), Messrs Charles Ould, A. Brousil and E. Woodhouse (cello), Mr J. Haydn Waud and Mr E. Ould (double bass) and Mr C. Hopkins-Ould (accompanist). Both programmes include historical and analytical notes, with musical examples. The name of Miss Emily Shinner is erased by pencil annotation.
22 April and 20 May 1890: Miss Hilda Wilson’s Vocal Recitals nos.1 and 3, given by members of the Wilson family with Edward Croager (piano, May only). A single item for string instruments was included in each half. Due to illness, Miss Hilda Wilson was replaced by Miss Mary Morgan for the second of these concerts.
21 May 1891: Mr Lawrence Kellie’s Second Vocal Recital, with Mrs Helen Trust, Miss Rosa Leo, Miss Kuhe, Miss M. V. White, Mr Francois Noijé, Mr Leo Stern, Mr Beerbohm Tree and Mr Lawrence Kellie. Also, cello solos in each act by Leo Stern. The programme provides song texts in translation where necessary.
