Collection Title
St. James´s Hall Ballad Concerts (1894-99)
Unique Identifier
e.1397
Description
A miscellaneous collection of programmes and wordbooks for nine Ballad Concerts, given at St. James’s Hall, London between 1894 and 1899, held under the direction of William Boosey.

With the exception of that given in 1899, these were two-part concerts of solo and small-ensemble vocal repertory, combined with a number of instrumental solos. The performance in 1899 replaced the instrumental solos with orchestral works. Unless another choral ensemble is cited below, all concerts featured the Meister Glee Singers (Messrs William Sexton, William Forington, Gregory Hast and Webster Norcross).

Almost all programmes include a detailed advertisement for the next concert in the series. These provide information regarding the performers engaged (see below) but no complete list of the works to be performed. The programmes for 29 January, 12 February and 4 November 1896 and 3 February 1897 include handwritten annotations which record the encores performed and, occasionally, include information regarding changes to the printed programmes.
