Royal Musical Festival in Westminster Abbey (1834)
Unique Identifier
Mus.1.d.68
Description
A bound volume containing the programmes with words for the four performances given as the Royal Music Festival in Westminster Abbey on 24, 26 and 28 June and 1 July 1834, conducted by Sir George Smart.

Each programme begins with detailed lists of the Patrons/Directors of the event, the principal performers engaged, and the members of the choral and orchestral ensembles.

The performances were all three-part concerts of sacred music, the fourth being a performance of Handel, The Messiah. The second and third concerts both included the first English performances of arias by Mozart (from David Penitente and the Litany in B flat).

Proceeds from these performances were divided between the Royal Society of Musicians, The New Musical and Choral Funds and the Royal Academy of Music.
