Collection Description

Collection Title
Oxford University Musical Union (1884-1914)
Unique Identifier
G.A.Oxon 4o 291
Description
Four bound volumes of material relating to the activity of the Oxford University Musical Union between 1884 and 1914, consisting principally of handbills for the weekly meetings given in the Club Rooms and programmes (typically with words) for Invitation Concerts given at various college venues.

The club was established to assist the 'promotion of knowledge of Chamber Music amongst its members' and the programmes reflect this, combining small-scale chamber music with vocal and instrumental solos.

The weekly meetings were typically given by members of the club (with occasional performances given by non-resident members such as the Cambridge University Musical Club) and the Invitation Concerts by professional performers.

None of the programmes for the weekly meetings include a reference to the location of the venue, but it is known from other sources that this was 3 Magdalen Street (to April 1901) and thereafter 34 Holywell Street/Holywell Music Room.

In addition to concert programmes, each volume (and particularly no. 2) includes a range of printed documentary material relating to the organization. This includes printed announcements, financial statements/accounts, lists of Committee and Members, copies of the Rules and extracts from Union meetings.

All programmes provide records of the performers involved, including lists of the choral and/or orchestral ensembles when such works were occasionally included in the weekly meetings. The programmes for the Invitation Concerts include lists of the Committee members.

Spread across the various documents is assorted documentation – including prospectuses, programmes and wordbooks (some with lists of the choral and orchestral ensembles) – for the Festival Meeting held between 29 April and 1 May 1895 to mark the close of the first decade of the Union's existence.
