Collection Title
Oxford University Musical Club Public Classical Concerts (1891-1909)
Unique Identifier
G.A.Oxon 4o 292*
Description
A largely complete collection of prospectuses, handbills and programmes from the first 18 seasons of the Oxford University Musical Club Public Classical Concerts, 1891-1909, held as a bound volume.

The concert on 26 November 1891 were held at the Corn Exchange, Oxford. Thereafter, concerts took place in the Sheldonian Theatre (November 1891–March 1897) and at the Town Hall, Oxford (October 1897–1909).

With the exception of the first, each season consisted of five concerts, typically mixing chamber and orchestral (later choral-orchestral) concerts: seasons 8, 11 and 12 consisted entirely of chamber concerts whilst season no. 18 was purely orchestral.

Where no other indication is given below, the orchestral concerts were conducted by C. H. Lloyd (seasons 1-7), C. V. Stanford (seasons 9-10) and Hugh Allen (seasons 13-18).

Material for each season includes a prospectus (with preliminary programmes and an introductory note). Where no other indication is given below, documentation for individual concerts consists of a handbill and a programme with words and notes. Programmes for the orchestral concerts typically include a list of the orchestral ensemble. From the 15th season onwards, certain programmes are accompanied by posters.

Programmes are bound in a largely chronological fashion, but with the material for seasons 6-8 bound with the handbills together, followed by the programmes.
