Collection Title
Oxford Subscription Concerts (1955-70)
Unique Identifier
MS.Top.Oxon.c.678/2
Description
A largely complete set of prospectuses and programmes for the Oxford Subscription Concerts, seasons 36 to 50, given at the Town Hall and Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford between 1955 and 1970, held loosely as the first of two parcels within a single box.

All programmes carry words and notes and many provide a list of the orchestral ensemble. Programmes for 24 November 1955, 14 February 1957 and 14 May 1959 include musical examples as part of the programme notes. From the 40th season onwards, programmes also include brief biographical notes. Accompanying many of the prospectuses is a financial statement for the season.

There are no prospectuses for the 45th and 49th seasons. Those concerts listed in square brackets below are those for which there are no individual programmes: the information given is thus derived from the prospectus for the season. Where there are discrepancies between the programme listings in the prospectuses and the programmes themselves, the latter is deemed to be more accurate.

During the 41st to 43rd seasons, all concerts were held at the Town Hall. During the remaining seasons, performances were split between the Town Hall and the Sheldonian Theatre.
