Collection Description

Collection Title
Oxford and Cambridge Musical Club (1900-29)
Unique Identifier
Dep.c.966-67
Description
A largely complete set of handbills for the first 686 concerts given by the Oxford and Cambridge Musical Club between 1 March 1900 and 19 December 1929 (missing that for concert number 376), arranged chronologically and pasted into two scrapbooks (1900–12 and 1913–29).

Interfiled with this main sequence are handbills for various other concerts given by members of the Oxford and Cambridge Musical Club during the same period.

The main sequence of performances was given largely on a Thursday evening and consisted of concerts of vocal and chamber music (including specially designated Ladies' Nights). The programmes provide no indication of the performance venue, but they are likely to have taken place at the Club's own rooms at 47 Leicester Square (to 1914) and 6 Bedford Square (from 1914).

The programmes for concert nos. 398, 403, 420 and 424 are handwritten. Many of the remaining programmes carry handwritten annotations recording changes to the printed programmes, including the performance of encores.
