Unique Identifier
7891.b.42/43
Description
Programmes and wordbooks for the first and fifth performances of the second season of the Oratorio Concerts, given at St. James's Hall, London on 8 December 1869 and 9 March 1870, held as two separate programmes.

Both documents include information regarding the vocal soloists and cite the involvement of a ‘band and chorus of 350 performers’ (Mr Joseph Barnby’s Choir), conducted by Barnby.

Both documents also include an advertisement for the next performance in the series, given on 21 December 1869 (‘Christmas performance of Handel’s Messiah’) and 6 April 1870 (‘Bach’s Passion Music’) respectively. Bound with the programme for the concert on 8 December is a copy of the Prospectus for the complete sequence of nine Oratorio Concerts, including an indication of the works to be given at each concert, a brief historical overview of the repertory selected, and a list of the principal vocal performers. A complete set of individual programmes for the season can also be found at British Library shelfmark X.431/436.

8 December 1869: Handel, Dettingen Te Deum and Acis and Galatea (both being given for the first time in England with the additional accompaniments by Mendelssohn), with Madame Lemmens-Sherrington, Miss Marion Severn, Mr Vernon Rigby, Mr Montem Smith and Herr Carl Stepan (vocal).

9 March 1870: Beethoven, Choral Fantasia and Mass in D, with Madame Rudersdorff, Mademoiselle de Salewska, Madame Patey, Mr W.H. Cummings, Mr Edward Lloyd and Herr Carl Stepan (vocal), Arabella Goddard (piano) and Mr F.A.W. Docker (organ).
