Collection Description

Collection Title
Mr Plunket Greene and Mr Leonard Borwick Recitals (1893-98)
Unique Identifier
c.371.c. (2, 4.)
A collection of programmes and wordbooks for ten Song and Pianoforte Recitals given by Mr Plunket Greene and Mr Leonard Borwick at St. James’s Hall, London between 1893 and 1898, held across tracts 2 and 4 of a bound volume.

Each Recital was in four sections, alternating piano music performed by Borwick with vocal repertory given by Plunket Greene.

The piano music was largely nineteenth-century Austro-Germanic repertory, with the first section generally comprising one extended work and the second including a number of shorter pieces. The vocal music was more wide ranging, both chronologically and geographically.

All wordbooks provide a translation of the texts where necessary (by Paul England). Certain programmes also contain brief handwritten annotations, detailing changes to the printed programmes and recording works which were encored.

Tract 2
6 December 1893: including Schumann, Carnival and a set of vocal pieces entitled ‘Songs of the Four Nations’, arranged by Arthur Somervell.
16 November and 14 December 1894 (1st and 2nd recitals): the programme for 14 December contains an advertisement (with programme) for the third recital in the series, to be given on 11 January 1895.
8 November 1895: including Schumann, Dichterliebe.

Tract 4.
30 October 1896:
5 February and 5 March 1897 (1st and 3rd recitals): the first of these concerts was a commemoration performance devoted to the works of Schubert, the programme for which includes an advertisement (with programme) for the second recital in the series, to be given on 19 February 1897.
25 February, 11 and 25 March 1898: accompanied by Mr S. Liddle. The programme for the first performance of this series contains a brief handwritten correction to the printed programme.
