Collection Description

Collection Title
Mr and Mrs Henschel's Vocal Recitals (1889-92)
Unique Identifier
c.374.a. (2.)
A collection of handbills and programmes (with words) relating to vocal recitals given by Mr and Mrs Henschel between 1889 and 1892. Only some of these documents include information regarding the venue, but those that do consistently place these performances at the Princes’ Hall, Piccadilly.

All of these concerts were described as Mr and Mrs Henschel’s Vocal Recitals, and consisted largely of nineteenth-century vocal repertory performed by the two musicians referred to in the series title. This included much music by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Carl Loewe, as well as a number of songs written by Mr Henschel and performed from manuscript.

All programmes provide the words of the songs in translation where appropriate and some contain brief handwritten annotations, commenting on the performance and indicating encores.

The listing below reflects the order in which these programmes are bound, with the exception of the handbill for 15 February 1889 which is held loose in the volume.

[no date/venue]: programme and wordbook.

16 March [no year]: handbill for third (and last) Vocal Recital, given with the assistance of Miss Lena Little, Mr Iver McKay, and Mr Herbert Thorndike.

15 February 1889: handbill for the First Vocal Recital. This document also contains, on the reverse, a notice of the second performance, to take place of 22 February.

4 and 11 December 1889: programme and wordbook for first and second Vocal Recitals.

24 November 1890: handbill for Vocal Recital, given with the assistance of Miss Emily Shinner (violin) and Miss Florence Hemmings (cello). This includes, on the reverse, the programme for the second recital, to be given on 8 December 1890.

8 December 1890: programme and wordbook.

1 and 15 May and 3 July 1891: programmes and wordbooks.

10 February 1892: programme and wordbook for second recital in the series.
