Collection Description

Collection Title
London Glee and Madrigal Union (1861)
Unique Identifier
A collection of programmes and wordbooks for concerts given in the Dudley Gallery, Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly on 18 November, [25 November] and 9 December 1861 as the first, third and fourth performances of the third season given by the London Glee and Madrigal Union. These documents are bound so that the programme for 18 November appears after those for 25 November and 9 December.

These were two-part concerts of solo and ensemble English vocal music, given by Miss J. Wells, Miss Eyles, Mr Baxter, Mr William H. Cummings, Mr Land and Mr Lawler, under the direction of Mr Land. The concert on 9 December included the first performance of William Shield, 'Light as thistle down moving' (Rosina).

Each programme begins with an Address, where it is noted that: 'Mr Thomas Oliphant being unavoidably prevented, during the present Series, from giving, as heretofore, his Literary Illustrations; Remarks and Notices by him … are appended to various pieces contained in the Programme and Book of Words'.

Although only a single date is given on each programme, the concerts would appear to have been repeated a number of times during the week.

Note: Programmes for the second series of performances given by the London Glee and Madrigal Union (January-February 1860) are held at British Library shelfmark 11781.d.23. (5-11).
