Description
A collection of programmes for ten concerts given in London between 30 May and 15 June 1949 as part of the Elgar Festival, arranged chronologically within a bound volume.

This event was sponsored by the Henry Wood Concert Society and all of the concerts consisted of works by Elgar. Unless otherwise stated below, they were given at the Royal Albert Hall, London.

The majority of the programmes include historical and analytical notes: those for the Orchestral Concerts are written by Edwin Evans and those for the choral performances by Basil Maine. Programmes for the choral performances also include wordbooks and programmes for both types of performance include a biographical note on Elgar written by Arnold Bax. The majority of programmes include photographs and have been signed by the vocal and/or instrumental soloists.

All concerts featuring the London Symphony Orchestra were led by George Stratton and conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent.

30 May 1949: Orchestral Concert by the Hallé Orchestra, with Arnold Greir (organ), led by Laurence Turner and conducted by John Barbirolli, including Symphony No.2. A second copy of this programme, with an additional signature and a handwritten message from Barbirolli, is bound at the end of the volume.

1 June 1949: The Apostles, with Elsie Suddaby, Nancy Evans, William Herbert, George Pizzey, Gordon Clinton and Owen Brannigan (vocal), Arnold Greir (organ), the Royal Choral Society and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, led by Paul Beard and conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent.

2 June 1949, Concert Hall, Broadcasting House: Chamber Concert, given by the BBC Men's Chorus (conducted by Leslie Woodgate), the Aeolian String Quartet (Alfred Cave, Leonard Dight, Watson Forbes and John Moore) and Lance Dossor (piano) (with historical programme notes by Watson Forbes).

4 June 1949: Children's Concert, given by the London Symphony Orchestra, including a number of single-movement orchestral pieces, with selected movements from the 'Enigma' Variations (handbill only with the signature of Sargent).

5 June 1949: Symphony Concert, given by the London Symphony Orchestra, including the Violin Concert performed by Heifetz.

7 June 1949: Symphony Concert, given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, led by Paul Beard and conducted by Sir Adrian Boult, including the Cello Concerts given by Pierre Fournier.

8 June 1949: The Kingdom, given by Isobel Baillie, Janet Howe, Parry Jones and Harold Williams (vocal), with Arnold Greir (organ), with the Royal Choral Society and the London Symphony Orchestra.

10 June 1949, Royal College of Music: Caractacus, with Stanley Pine, Kathleen Barton, Graham Offord, Robert Thomas, Glyn Jenkins, Garth Stacey and George Delderfield (vocal) and the Royal Academy of Music Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Clarence Raybould and Ernest Read (with lists of the choral and orchestral ensemble).

12 June 1949: Choral and Orchestral Concert, including The Music Makers, given by Anthony Quayle and Mary Jarred (vocal) with Arnold Greir (organ), the Alexandra Choir, (conducted by Charles Proctor) and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, led by Paul Beard and conducted by Sir Adrian Boult. This document includes handwritten annotations detailing the length (in minutes) of the individual pieces.

15 June 1949: The Dream of Gerontius, given by Gladys Ripley, Heddle Nash, Harold Williams (replaced by Gordon Clinton) (vocal), with Arnold Greir (organ), the Royal Choral Society and the London Symphony Orchestra.
