Volumes 1 and 2 of the papers of Henry Edward Rensburg, a Liverpool stockbroker who was chairman of the Liverpool Arts Society and Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and music critic of the Liverpool Daily Post.

These volumes contain the Minute Books of the chamber music society which met, usually on Sunday evenings, in the Rensburgs’ house from 1880-88 (MS 307) and 1888-1927 (MS 308). The books list the music played and the performers present. Those visiting performers who signed the book are listed in the index.

In addition to this handwritten documentation, the volumes contain the following printed programmes.

MS Mus. 307
21 January 1888: Schumann, String Quartet in F op. 41/2 and Schubert, String Quintet in A major, op. 114, given either side of Brahms, Liebes-Lieder.

MS Mus. 308
1 December 1888 and 18 December 1890, 2 Grove Park: two-part performances of vocal and instrumental chamber music, the former concluding with Schumann, Spanisches Liederspiel and the latter being titled ‘Silver Wedding, 1865-90’.
18 October 1905, Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool: three-part recital given by Mons. Pugno (piano).
21 November 1925, Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool: Mossel Concert no.2, given by Cortot (piano), Thibaud (violin) and Casals (cello) (with analytical notes by Eric Blom).
