Collection Description

Collection Title
Harold Rosenthal collection (1939-59)
Unique Identifier
Mus 315 c.2
Description
A miscellaneous collection of handbills and programmes for performances given at various London venues – predominantly the Royal Albert Hall – between 1939 and 1959, held loosely and arranged across five boxes within the collection of Harold Rosenthal (1917–87).

Many of the programmes contain words and/or notes. Items are generally mounted on loose A4 sheets and are often accompanied by press cuttings and/or tickets for the event. Where the performance formed part of a larger series, the prospectuses for that series can often be found.

Detailed entries for individual boxes are provided, divided as follows:

Box 1: 1941–47
Box 2: 1940–50
Box 3: 1941–50
Box 4: 1939–59
Box 5: 1939–54

These boxes form part of a large collection covering the period c. 1950–1987. The vast majority of this is operatic in orientation and is arranged by opera title. Although mostly British, there are also a fair number of foreign houses represented, especially from festival performance. Also held are files on conductors, intendants and British operatic premieres.
