Collection Description

Collection Title
Grand Festival of Sacred Music (1836)
Unique Identifier
A collection comprising the prospectus, programmes and wordbooks for three performances given as the Grand Festival of Sacred Music for the benefit of Charing Cross Hospital at Exeter Hall, London on 15, 20 and 22 April 1836, led by Franz Cramer and conducted by Sir George Smart, arranged chronologically in a single bound volume, with MS notes by Smart.

The performances on 15 and 20 April were in two acts, combining a 'miscellaneous selection … from the sacred works of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Hummel, Spohr and other great Composers' with extracts from Handel, Solomon/Israel in Egypt. The performance on 22 April was of Handel's Messiah. All performances were preceded by a public rehearsal, also at the Exeter Hall, on 14, 19 and 21 April.

Both the prospectus and the individual programmes provide a full list of the Patrons for the event and record the involvement of the following vocal and instrumental soloists:
Madame Caradori Allan, Mrs H. R. Bishop, Miss Bruce, Mrs W. Knyvett, Miss Masson, Miss Rainforth, Miss K. Robson, Mrs E Seguin, Mrs A. Shaw, Miss Tipping, Miss Wagstaff, Miss Woodyatt. Mr Balfe, Mr Barker, Mr Chapman, Mr Elliot, Mr Hobbs, Mr Horncastle, Mr Machin, Mr Sapio, Mr Stretton and Mr Turner (vocal).
Messrs Dando, Lindley, Dragonetti, G. Cooke, Willman, Denman, Platt, Harper, Smithies, Bean, Ponder and Chipp (instrumental).

All programmes contain annotations in Smart's hand which relate to both the rehearsal and the performance. These record the timings of both individual sections and of the complete performance, note any changes made to the printed programme order and identify those pieces that received encores. Smart also comments on the rehearsal provision for various pieces, on the exact division of the vocal forces, and on the movement of both performers and audience members.

Each programme also contains a copy of the annual statement of the Charing Cross Hospital for the year 1836 and the volume concludes with a printed announcement of the regulations for the festival (on the reverse of which is a diagram of the Exeter Hall), a further statement from Charing Cross Hospital (dated January 1837), and a printed letter of thanks to Sir George Smart (11 May 1836).
