Germany: Munich A-Z (excluding Nationaltheater) (1908-95)
A miscellaneous collection of press cuttings, handbills, programmes and prospectuses for performances given at various venues in Munich – principally theatres/opera houses but excluding the Nationaltheater – between 1908 and 1995, arranged by venue and held as 9 folders within a single box. For material relating to the Nationaltheater, see Centre for Performance History foreign collections: Germany: Munich Nationaltheater.

Folders 1, 5 and 7 of this collection include programmes for operatic performances given at the Alten Residenztheater (Cuvilliéstheater), Prinzregenten-Theater and Residenz Theater which might be assumed to have formed part of the Münchner Festspiele/Festspiele der Oper München, given under the auspices of the Bayerische Staatsoper. Performances at the Prinzregententheater were of works by Wagner and those at the Residenz Theatre by Mozart.
Alter Residenztheater (Cuvilliéstheater): 8, 10, 12 and 14 August 1960 and 1 and 13 August 1966 (with notes).
Prinzregenten-Theater: 3, 28 and 30 August 1924 (handbills only), 5 August 1925, 22, 27 and 31 August 1928, 20 July 1933 and 7 and 23 August 1935. Also, leaflets/prospectuses for August-September 1909 and July 1951 (with seating plan for 1909) and a souvenir brochure celebrating 50 years of the Prinzeregenten-Theatre/the Oper Festspiele (1901-51).
Residenz Theater: 23, 25, 26, 28 and 30 August 1928 and 25 July 1930: Mozart productions. Plus a single document for August 1912.

In addition to material relating to the festival these folders also contain the following material relating to their respective venues.
Folder 1/Alten Residenztheater: programmes with notes for the Bayerische Staatsoper on 16 November 1959 and 16 May 1976.
Folder 5/Prinzregenten-Theater: programmes with notes, photographs and illustrations for Donizetti, Lucia di Lammermoor (3 January 1957) and Gilbert and Sullivan, Iolanthe (7 June 1963, by the Sadler's Wells Opera, directed by Colin Davis), and a copy of the Blatter der Bayerischen Staatsoper, 1955–56.
Folder 7/Residenz Theatre: press cuttings for operatic performances on 23 and 29 January 1908 and a programme book for a production of Ibsen, Die Wildente on 4 May 1963.

The remaining folders in the collection cover the following venues.
Folder 2: Deutsches Museum/Kongress-Saal Deutsches Museum Munchen
Programmes for four performances, given by the English Chamber Orchestra on 10 November 1971 and 15 May 1974 (both with Daniel Barenboim), 23 May 1977 (with violinist Jaime Laredo, directed by Pinchas Zukerman) and 24 February 1978 (with pianist Murray Perahia, directed by Jose-Luis Garcia). Also, a further programme for a performance on 9 May 1980 given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra with Stephen Bishop-Kovacevich (piano), directed by Gennadi Roshdestwensky. All documents include notes, biographical notes, photographs and lists of the orchestral ensemble.

Folder 3: Miscellaneous venues
A press cutting for a performance at the Münchener Schauspielhaus on 28 January 1908 and a programme for the Münchener Volkstheater, 14 January 1913. Also, programmes for 2 productions by the Münchener Kammerspiele (26 January 1913 and [October 1960], the first at the Lustspielhaus and the second assumed to be at the Schauspielhaus.

Folder 4: Odeon/Koniglisches Odeon
A leaflet/prospectus for the Erstes Deutsches Brahms-Fest of 10-14 September 1909 (with seating plan) plus handbills for 2 performances given by the Konzertvereins-Orchester on Friday 8 December [no year] and 18 November 1922, directed by Adrian Boult with Mitja Nikisch (piano)/Katharine Arkandy (soprano).

Folder 6: Residenz

9 November 1995, Max-Joseph-Saal der Munchner Residenz: Münchner Hammerflugel des Frühen 19. Jahrhunderts with Christoph Hammer (with notes)

Folder 8: Theater am Gartnerplatz
Programmes with notes for 4 operatic productions given between 1956 and 1961, the majority without a specific date for the performance, with a prospectus for the 1964-65 season. Also, an undated document containing notes on the dramatic works of Rameau and programmes with notes for 24 April and 24 July 1979.

Folder 9: Tonhalle/Aula der Universität
August-September 1909, Tonhalle: Beethoven-Brahms-Bruckner Cyklus, directed by Ferdinand Lowe (single document with seating plan). Also, individual programme (with photograph of Lowe) for Achtes Konzert on 26 August.
1 September 1912, Tonhalle: Populäres Konzert/Richard Wagner-Abend, directed by Paul Prill (press cutting).
27/28 September 1950, Aula der Universität: 1. Philharmonisches Abonnementskonzert (Die Munchener Philharmoniker), with Edwin Fischer (piano), conducted by Fritz Rieger (single document with notes).

The CPH collections now form part of the RCM Library. The majority of the concert programme collections are stored off-site so you need to request items before arriving.
