Description
An extensive collection of programmes and handbills for performances given at the Philharmonie in Berlin between 1892 and 1938, held individually and arranged chronologically across the first 25 boxes of the Ernst Henschel collection (1892-1966).

For an introduction to this collection see Ernst Henschel collection: General.

The majority of these concerts were orchestral performances, given by the Berliner Philharmonisches Orchester, including a largely complete set of analytical programme books for the ten annual subscription concerts given between 1892 and 1938, conducted principally by Arthur Nikisch (25 November 1895 to the end of the 1921-22 season) and Wilhelm Furtwängler (from 1922-23 season). These documents carry historical and analytical notes (with musical examples) and the concerts typically included one solo performer.

There are also extended sequences of programmes for the concerts given by the Berliner Philharmonisches Orchester with Felix von Weingartner (1916-25), Bruno Walter (1919-32) and Heinz Unger (1920-31, for the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde), as well as for the Concert zum Besten des Pensionfonds (1897-1909).

The choral ensembles represented include the Berlin Philharmonischen Chor (1896-1937, directed by Siegfried Ochs), the Bruno Kittel'scher Chor (1913-36) and the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin (1919-33) and there are smaller sequences of programmes for performances given under the auspices of the Staat. Akademischen Hochschule für Musik zu Berlin (1925-27), the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (1907-14) and the Wagner-Vereine (1896-1907).
