Charles Winterbottom collection: volume 2 (1883)
Description
A miscellaneous collection of programmes for performances given at various London venues and in Glasgow, Leeds and Scarborough in 1883, held as the second of five volumes comprising the collection of the double bass player Charles Winterbottom, all five volumes of which are contained within a single box.

Programmes are listed here by venue, with the London venues followed by the provincial ones.

1. London venues
Athenaeum, Camden Road
19 April 1883: Athenaeum Amateur Orchestral Society 7th Annual Concert, conducted by Gilbert H. Betjemann (with a list of the orchestral ensemble).

Chelsea Congregational Church
1 November 1883: Mendelssohn, Elijah, conducted by Mr Henry A. Evans (handbill).

Clapham Hall
1 February, 16 March, 24 May and 30 November 1883: Clapham Amateur Orchestral Society 8th season nos. 2-4 and 9th season no. 1, conducted by Mr Ammon Winterbottom (with words and a list of the orchestral ensemble, plus a prospectus for the 9th season). Also, a programme with words for a Grand Evening Concert given by the same ensemble on 11 April 1883 at Kensington Town Hall.

Crystal Palace
18, 20 and 22 June 1883: Eighth Triennial Handel Festival (prospectus).

St. James's Hall
23 February, 6 and 27 April and 16 November 1883: Sacred Harmonic Society (handbills).

Royal Albert Hall
25 January 1883: Scotch Festival (with words).


2. Provincial venues
Glasgow, St. Andrew's Hall
8, 15, 22 and 29 December 1883: Saturday Popular Concerts given by the Glasgow Choral Union, conducted by C. V. Stanford (15 December only) and August Manns (with words and notes).

Leeds, Town Hall
10-13 October 1883: Leeds Triennial Musical Festival, conducted by Arthur Sullivan (prospectus).

Scarborough Aquarium and Theatre
Monday 3 September [no year]: Special Grand Evening Concert given by the Aquarium Orchestra, directed by Otto Bernhardt. Also held are various prospectuses and leaflets for this venue.

Building Information
The CPH collections now form part of the RCM Library. The majority of the concert programme collections are stored off-site so you need to request items before arriving. Requests for programmes are processed on Thursday for delivery to the library the following week. The Library itself is open Monday to Friday during term times and Tuesday to Friday during vacations.
