Collection Description

Collection Title
Carl Newton collection (1858-2004)
Unique Identifier
Mus 319.c.1-26
A miscellaneous collection of handbills, programmes, prospectuses and brochures for concerts given in various London, English and Scottish venues between 1858 and 2004, held as 11 bound volumes, 14 boxes of loose programmes and two single items, forming the collection of Carl Newton.

In addition to programmes for concerts attended from 1963, Newton collected historical programmes, starting with the St. James's Hall Monday Popular Concerts (1859–69).

The miscellaneous selections contain programmes for many of the key London venues – including the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall – as well as a large number of programmes from provincial performances, with a particularly strong representation of programmes from Eastbourne and the surrounding area. Prospectuses from the Three Choirs Festivals and a number of other provincial English festivals are included.

Many of the programmes contain words and historical, descriptive, analytical and/or biographical notes, often with photographs and lists of the choral and orchestral ensembles, where appropriate.
