Description
A collection of prospectuses, programmes and wordbooks for the third and fourth seasons of the British Chamber Music Concerts, given at the Queen's Hall, London in 1896 and 1897 under the direction of Ernest Fowles.

These were concerts of solo and chamber music by British composers, including a number of first performances. The programmes provide detailed information regarding the performances and all concerts were accompanied by Henry Bird.

Third season: 4 and 18 November and 8 and 16 December 1896
4 November 1896: including a piano quartet by A.C. Mackenzie, given by Agnes Zimmermann, Richard Gompertz, Miss Cecilia Gates and Paul Ludwig. Also, instrumental solos by the above and vocal pieces given by Mr Arthur Oswald.
18 November 1896: including the first performance of R.H. Walthew, Piano Trio in C minor, given by Ernest Fowles (piano), Jasper Sutcliffe (violin) and Charles Draper (clarinet). The same ensemble also performed a piano trio by Algernon Ashton. Vocal pieces by Mrs Henschel.
8 December 1896: including the first performance of Joseph Speaight, Quartet in G minor, given by Messrs Jasper Sutcliffe, Wallace Sutcliffe, Leonard Fowles and Edward Howell. This ensemble was joined by Miss Dora Bright for a Quintet by Gerard F. Cobb. Also, instrumental solos from the above and vocal pieces from Miss Marian McKenzie.
16 December 1896: including the first performance of Leonard Fowles, Sonata in B flat for Pianoforte and Viola (No.2), given by Mr Ernest Fowles and Alfred Hobday. Also, string ensemble pieces by Coleridge-Taylor and G.A. Macfarren, and vocal solos given by Mrs Helen Trust.

Fourth season: 26 October, 9 and 23 November, and 9 December 1897
26 October 1897: including the first performance of Alfred Wall, Quartet in G, given by Messrs Jasper and Wallace Sutcliffe, Leonard Fowles and Whitehouse. Also a piano trio by Stanford, with Ernest Fowles (piano) and vocal solos given by Miss Kate Cove.
9 November 1897: including the first performance of Alfred Carnall, Quartet in F, given by Messrs Jasper and Wallace Sutcliffe, Leonard Fowles and Arthur Williams. Also, piano music, written and performed by Agnes Zimmermann and vocal solos given by Mrs Ambler-Brereton. The wordbook for this concert includes a handwritten annotation relating to the performance of the Carnall quartet, the content of which is provided in square brackets below: ‘First [and last] time of performance’.
23 November 1897: including the first performance of William Yeates Hurlstone, Sonata in D minor, for Pianoforte and Violin, given by Messrs. Ernest Fowles and Jasper Sutcliffe. Further solos by the above, plus vocal pieces by Mr Arthur Walenn.
9 December 1897: including the first performance of Percy Pitt, Modern Suite for Pianoforte alone, given by Mr Ernest Fowles. Also, a clarinet quintet by Coleridge-Taylor, given by Messrs Charles Draper, Jasper Sutcliffe, Wallace Sutcliffe, Leonard Fowles and Whitehouse, and vocal pieces by Mr Arthur Thompson.

This volume also contains programmes for five other concerts given at the Queen's Hall during the final decade of the nineteenth century. A description of these is provided under the entry Queen's Hall Concerts (1896-98).
