Collection Description

Collection Title
Beecham Sunday Concerts (1936-37)
Unique Identifier
An incomplete collection of analytical programmes for the 1936-37 season of the Beecham Sunday Concerts (nos. 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 11, 12 and 13), given at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, each programme held separately.

These were two-part concerts of predominantly nineteenth-century orchestral repertory, given by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, led by David McCallum and conducted, unless otherwise stated below, by Sir Thomas Beecham.

Each programme includes historical and analytical notes by Edwin Evans, a photograph of the conductor and a list of the orchestral ensemble. Where appropriate, the notes include the texts for vocal pieces (given both in the original language and in translation). These documents also carry a large number of advertisements, including some (with preliminary programmes) for other performances in this series.

11 October 1936: Léon Goossens (oboe), including the first London performance of [Francesco] Ticciati, Concerto in G for Oboe and Strings.
13 December 1936: Brahms Concert with Cecilia Hansen (violin), Elsie Suddaby and Roy Henderson (vocal) and the Royal Opera Choir.

28 February 1937: Mozart Concert, with Geoffrey Gilbert (flute) and Louis Kentner (piano).
7 March 1937: Maggie Teyte (vocal), including Hermann Hans Wetzler, Symphonic Dance in Basque Style from the Opera ‘The Basque Venus’, Op.14 (conducted by the composer).

A complete set of programmes for this season is held as part of the collection at British Library shelf mark d.479.
