Collection Description

Collection Title
Abbey Glee Club (1886-1906)
Unique Identifier
X.439/601
Description
A collection of programmes, with words, for nine Ladies' Evening Concerts, given by the Abbey Glee Club at Westminster Town Hall, Caxton Street (from 1904, Caxton Hall) between 1886 and 1904. Also, programmes with separate wordbooks for two further performances of this sort, given in 1905 and 1906.

These were two-part performances of English choral repertory (including glees and part songs). Each programme includes a note of the President and Vice-President of the organization and carries an extensive list of the vocal performers. A number also include a small illustration.

The programmes for the final two concerts listed here provide an indication of the institutional affiliation of the performers: the boy sopranos are drawn from the London College for Choristers and the remainder are variously associated with the Chapel Royal, St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. The wordbooks for these same performances carry a list of the committee members of the Club.
