Unique Identifier
Mus 317 c.1-13
Description
A miscellaneous collection of loose handbills and programmes for performances given at various venues in Cambridge and London between 1906 and 1961, arranged chronologically and held over 13 boxes as the collection of the nutritionist and writer on music Alfred Louis Bacharach (1891–1966).
The Cambridge programmes are mostly from the period 1906–1914, and include an extended run of handbills for the concerts of the Cambridge University Musical Club.
The London programmes are included in all boxes of the collection and contain a large number of items from the Queen's Hall, including programmes from the Queen's Hall Promenade Concerts (and later the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts at the Royal Albert Hall), the Queen's Hall Symphony Concerts and performances given by the London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Society. There is also an extended run of programmes for the first 17 seasons of concerts given under the auspices of the Working Men's College, Crowndale Road, Camden, 1920–37.
Many of the programmes, particularly those for the Queen's Hall concerts, contain words and historical, descriptive and/or analytical notes. Some contain musical examples, lists of the orchestral ensemble and/or photographs of the principal performers.
The programmes document solo, chamber, orchestral and operatic performances and record a large number of first performances, including the premiers of pieces by a range of English composers, particularly Arnold Bax.
A detailed entry is provided for each box of this collection, with the programmes ordered by venue.
