Collection Description

Collection Title
Aylmer Buesst Collection: Miscellaneous programmes, loose (1923-1939)
A collection of 50 loose programmes, from 1923 to 1939.

The programmes relate to concerts and opera performances by students of the Royal College of Music, Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School of Music. The concerts were largely given at the conservatoires. Venues included the Parry Opera Theatre (Royal College of Music), College Hall (Royal College of Music – not the student accommodation block of the same name, but a venue within the main building, which is probably the current "Concert Hall"), Duke’s Hall (Royal Academy of Music) and Theatre (Guildhall School of Music). In addition, a few external venues were used for concerts – the New Scala Theatre and the Queen’s Hall.

The collection includes a number of miscellaneous items: a review of a concert series, extracted from a journal or magazine; an announcement of scholarship winners from the Royal College of Music in 1933, where Alymer Buesst was a member of the adjudicating panel; a programme from a memorial service held at St. John's, Smith Square.

A number of programmes in the collection were conducted by Alymer Buesst. In addition, there is a programme from an orchestral rehearsal in 1923 where Buesst conducted a performance of his symphonic poem “Napoleon”, alongside other student composer-conductors.

The programmes are arranged chronologically. Non-programme items are at the end of the sequence.
