Collection Description

Collection Title
Aylmer Buesst Collection: BBC Concerts (1930-1945)
A collection of three volumes of programmes and prospectuses from concerts organised by the BBC, from 1930 to 1945. There are two volumes from 1930-1935 and 1936-1945 respectively. The third volume also spans 1930 to 1935, but largely contains different material.

The programmes feature concerts given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, under a number of different conductors. The majority of programmes are from concerts given at Queen’s Hall. In addition, there is a programme from a concert given at Broadcasting House. The final programmes in the collection are from war-time concerts given after the Queen’s Hall was destroyed. These are from concerts given at the Royal Albert Hall and the Corn Exchange, Bedford.

The majority of programmes are from concerts given as part of the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts or as part of the series entitled “Symphony Concerts” (alternatively known as “BBC Symphony Concerts”). In addition, there are a number of programmes from the London Music Festival, as well as programmes from the mini-festival “Six Concerts of British Music”. The majority of concerts are orchestral or choral; in addition, there are programmes from concert performances of opera, including the first concert performance in Britain of “Mathis the Painter” (Hindemith – sung in English) and the first performance in England of “Wozzeck” (Berg – sung in German).

Two volumes (1930-1935; 1936-1945) are arranged in chronological order. There is a third volume (1930-1935) which is arranged in reverse chronological order.
