Collection Description

Collection Title
Henry Wood Collection: Miscellaneous Programmes (1934-1937)
A collection of two volumes of programmes from various venues, 1934 to 1937. The majority of programmes are from concerts conducted by Henry Wood. The programmes contain analytical programme notes and musical examples.

The programmes relate to concerts given in London and provincial venues. In addition, there are programmes from one foreign venue. The venues included are as follows: City Hall, Sheffield; St. George’s Hall, Liverpool; Town Hall, Huddersfield; Queen’s Hall; Pavilion, Bournemouth; Plaza Cinema, Watford; Royal Albert Hall; Wigmore Hall; Palladium [Argyll Street]; Pavilion, Torquay; Central Hall, Liverpool; Winter Garden, Devonshire Park, Eastbourne; White Rock Pavilion, Hastings; Royal Academy of Music: Duke’s Hall; Casino Kursaal-Communal, Knocke; Kursaal d’Ostende; Dome, Brighton; Cambridge Hall, Southport; Town Hall, Worthing; City Hall, Cardiff; Guildhall, Winchester; Paramount Theatre, Liverpool; Odeon Cinema, Watford. There are also a few programmes with unspecified venues: these include concerts given by the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra (1934) and the Hallé Concerts Society (1936).

The majority of concerts are orchestral or choral concerts. A variety of performing groups took part in the concerts, including the Queen’s Hall Orchestra and the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra.

A number of different organisations organised the concerts represented in the collection: these include the Royal Academy of Music and the Liverpool Philharmonic Society. Some programmes in the collection are from festivals. For instance, there are programmes from the 1936 Sheffield Musical Festival. There are programmes from a variety of concert series, including a significant amount of programmes from the Sunday Afternoon Concerts at the Queen’s Hall (the title of the series was later abbreviated to “Sunday Concerts”).

The collection also includes two London orchestral concerts guides form October and December 1936.

The programmes are arranged chronologically.
