Collection Description

Collection Title
Henry Wood Collection: Brand Lane Festival Concerts (1916-1923)
A collection of two volumes and seven loose items from Brand Lane Festival Concerts, 1916 to 1923.

There are bound volumes from 1916-1917 (the front cover to this volume is incorrectly embossed “Brand Lane Subscription Concerts”) and 1920-1921. There are loose items as follows: 1919-1920 (1 prospectus, 4 programmes); 1921-1922 (1 prospectus); 1922-1923 (1 programme).

The concerts took place from October to April – Brand Lane’s vision was to have the stellar quality of performers typically to be found at a festival, but to make the concerts dispersed through the year – on Saturdays. The amount of concerts per season increased with time: for instance there were 7 concerts in 1916 to 1917, yet 12 in 1921-1922. The concerts took place in the Free Trade Hall.

Concerts were a variety of genres: there were orchestral concerts, choral concerts, recitals, military band concerts and concerts of operatic extracts. The conductors included Brand Lane and Henry Wood. Some performances featured the New Brand Lane Orchestra and the Manchester Philharmonic [choir]. There were also military bands such as the bands of the Irish Guards, Welsh Guards and Scots Guards.

The programmes are arranged in chronological order. Loose programmes are kept at the end of the sequence.
