Collection Title
Oxford (1818-1836)
Description
A collection of one bound volume and various loose programmes from concerts in Oxford, 1818 to 1836. Programmes contain words to sung items.
The majority of programmes in the collection are from concerts given in “The Theatre” and “Music Room” (Holywell Music Room). There are a few programmes from concerts that took place in the Music School, Town Hall, Star Assembly Room and Carfax Church.
Some of the concerts formed part of various festivals in the city: these include the University Music Festival (for instance 1823, 1831, 1834), Oxford Musical Festival (for instance 1827) and Grand Music Festival (for instance 1822). There is also a programme from the University Amateur Musical Society and a programme from a concert given as part fulfilment of a degree requirement, by William Marshall.
The majority of programmes are entitled “Choral concerts” or “Miscellaneous concerts”. The concerts contained a mixture of solo vocal items, orchestral items and chamber music. A few concerts contained complete performances of oratorios; some were written by William Crotch – professor of music in the University - and included “Captivity of Judah” and “Palestine”.
Arrangement:
The programmes are arranged chronologically.
