Collection Description

Collection Title
Manchester Musical Festival (1836)
A collection of seven programmes from the Manchester Musical Festival, 1836. The festival is entitled “The second grand musical festival, in Manchester”. The concerts were conducted by George Smart. The collection contains four programmes from morning concerts and three evening concerts. The morning concerts took place at the Collegiate Church, and consisted of oratorios and other scared vocal music. The evening concerts took place at the Theatre Royal and were secular miscellaneous concerts. These included orchestral music, instrumental music and solo vocal music. The collection also contains a pamphlet – presumed to have been produced after the festival – which describes the origins of the festival as well as descriptions of the festival, criticism and participants.

The programmes are divided into morning and evening concerts, then arranged chronologically.
