Collection Description

Collection Title
Canterbury Cathedral Festival (1929)
Description
A collection of six programmes from the Canterbury Cathedral Festival of Music & Drama, 1929. The collection also contains one festival leaflet bound into the volume, and four loose leaflets. In addition, one of the leaflets contains a typed chorus rehearsal schedule.

The festival tool place from 19/08/29 to 24/08/29, and it is assumed the concerts took place in the cathedral. The programmes contain all the events for each day of the festival, including drama and music. The festival contained four orchestral concerts, and two concerts that featured orchestral and choral music. The concerts were given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, under various conductors including Adrian Boult. In addition, Gustav Holst conducted a performance of one of his own pieces. The choruses in the festival were made up from local singers, including a “Kent Chorus” featuring hundreds of singers from nearby towns and cities. There were also chamber concerts, given as part of the festival.

Arrangement:
The programmes are arranged chronologically.
