Collection Description

Collection Title
Hallé Concerts (1918-1932)
A collection of approximately 240 programmes from Hallé Concerts, 1918-1932. There are gaps in the collection for the 1919-1920 and 1925-1926 seasons. The programmes contain analytical programme notes, musical examples and words to sung items.

There are roughly 20 programmes per season – excepting the 1918-1919 season, with only 15 programmes – and the season ran form October to March or April.

No venue or geographic location is indicated on the programmes, but it is assumed that the concerts took place took in Manchester.

The programmes from 1920 onwards were chiefly conducted by Hamilton Harty, who became permanent conductor of the orchestra in 1920; the programmes from the 1918-1919 season were divided between Thomas Beecham, Eugene Goossens and Hamilton Harty.

The majority of programmes were orchestral; there were also performances of oratorio and concert performances of opera, featuring the Hallé Chorus.

The programmes are arranged chronologically.
