Collection Title
BBC Concerts (1940-1941)
Description
A collection of 58 programmes from BBC concerts, 1940 to 1941. The programmes include analytical programme notes. The programmes are from the provinces; the majority are from orchestral concerts given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the remainder are from the BBC Theatre Orchestra.
Chiefly, the programmes from the BBC Symphony Orchestra are from concerts at Colston Hall, Bristol. These were largely “Lunch hour concerts” (usually Fridays) of Symphony Concerts (usually Wednesdays). In addition, there are programmes from the following venues: Gaumont Place, Taunton; Empire Theatre, Cardiff; Odeon, Bridgwater. Some concerts also featured the BBC Chorus.
Programmes from the BBC Theatre Orchestra are from a number of venues: Town Hall, Cheltenham; Colston Hall, Bristol; Pavilion, Bath; New Theatre Royal, Wolverhampton; Winter Gardens, Malvern; The Regal, Leamington Spa. These concerts were all conducted by Stanford Robinson, and occasionally featured the BBC Theatre Chorus.
Arrangement:
The programmes are largely arranged chronologically. Non-Bristol programmes from the BBCSO and the BBCTO programmes are at the end of the sequence.
