BBC Concerts (1956-1957)
Description
A collection of 37 programmes from concerts organised by the BBC, from 1956 to 1957. Some programmes contain analytical programme notes with illustrative musical examples.

The collection contains programmes from the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Concert Orchestra. The programmes from the BBC Symphony Orchestra include London concerts given in the Royal Festival Hall and provincial concerts from the following venues: Civic Hall, Wolverhampton; Town Hall, Birmingham; St. Andrew’s Hall, Norwich; Gaumont Theatre, Ipswich; Caird Hall, Dundee; Music Hall, Aberdeen; St. Andrew’s Hall, Glasgow; Usher Hall, Edinburgh; Worcester Cathedral. These provincial concerts were all conducted by Malcolm Sargent. Both the London and provincial concerts occasionally included performances by the following groups: Scottish Choral Society; BBC Chorus; BBC Choral Society.

BBC Concert Orchestra material includes programmes from the following provincial venues: De Montford Hall, Leicester; Civic Hall, Wolverhampton; Town Hall Birmingham; Albert Hall, Nottingham; Central Hall, Grimsby; St. George’s Hall, Bradford; Leeds Town Hall; Assembly Hall, Worthing; Princes Theatre, Clacton-on-Sea; De la Waar Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea; Winter Gardens, Margate; Winter Gardens Ballroom, Morecambe (which featured the BBC Northern Orchestra); Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone. A large amount of these concerts were conduced by Vilem Tausky. Some concerts were given as part of the series “Friday Night is Music Night”. Performances by the orchestra were occasionally supplemented with performances by the following choirs: Midland Light Orchestra; BBC Men’s Chorus; Bexhill Choral Society; Margate Festival Choir; Worthing Municipal Choir; Mull and Felton Works Band; British United Male Voice Choir; West Riding Opera Circle Chorus. There is also a programme from a concert by the BBC Concert Orchestra given at the Royal Albert Hall.

Arrangement:
The programmes are divided between the BBCSO and the BBCCO. BBCSO programmes are divided first into London and Provincial sequence, then organised by date. BBCCO provincial programmes are organised into a chronological sequence, with the London programme coming at the end of the sequence.

Building Information
The CPH collections now form part of the RCM Library. The majority of the concert programme collections are stored off-site so you need to request items before arriving. Requests for programmes are processed on Thursday for delivery to the library the following week. The Library itself is open Monday to Friday during term times and Tuesday to Friday during vacations.
