Collection Description

Collection Title
BBC Concerts (1954-1955)
A collection of 33 programmes from concerts organised by the BBC, from 1954 to 1955. Some programmes contain analytical programme notes with illustrative musical examples.

The majority of programmes are from concerts given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra. These are largely from concerts which took place in the Royal Festival Hall, but the collection also includes a programme from a “Henry Wood Birthday Concert” given at the Royal Albert Hall. The collection contains programmes from concerts given as part of two provincial tours of the orchestra: these were conducted by Malcolm Sargent. Concerts took place at Peterborough Cathedral and St. Andrew’s Hall (Norwich) in February 1955. Concerts took place in the following venues in early May, 1955: King George’s Hall, Blackburn; City Hall, Hull; City hall, Sheffield; St. George’s Hall, Bradford; Town Hall, Leeds. Other groups which occasionally joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra in concerts are as follows: BBC Chorus; BBC Choral Society; BBC Women’s Chorus.

The collection contains programmes from concerts given by the BBC Theatre Orchestra in a number of provincial venues: Grand Pier Pavilion, Herne Bay; Prince’s Theatre (town hall), Clacton-on-Sea; The Dome, Brighton; Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone; De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea. These concerts were conducted by Charles Mackerras, and also included performances by Thurrock Males Voices Choir, Ilford Girls’ Choir and Orpington Junior Singers.

There is also a programme from a concert entitled “New Music for Brass”. This concert featured the “All star” concert brass band of Great Britain and Fodon’s Motor Works Band.

The collection is chiefly chronological.
