Collection Title
BBC Concerts (1953-1954)
A collection of 30 programmes from concerts organised by the BBC, from 1953 to 1954. Some programmes contain analytical programme notes with illustrative musical examples.

The majority of programmes are from concerts given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra. These are largely from “BBC Symphony Concerts” which took place in the Royal Festival Hall, but the collection also includes one programme from the Royal Albert Hall. There are also a number of programmes from BBC Symphony Orchestra concerts in provincial venues, from the following venues: City Hall, Newcastle-upon-Tyne; Free Trade Hall, Manchester; Victoria Hall, Hanley; Colston Hall, Bristol; Ulster Hall, Belfast; Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool; Gaumont Theatre, Chester; Odeon Theatre, Southend-on-Sea. These provincial concerts were all conducted by Malcolm Sargent. There are programmes from a series of four “Dvorak Commemoration Concerts” given at the Royal Festival Hall by the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

There are also five programmes from a series of BBC Third Programme Concerts, which took place in the Royal Festival Hall. These were given by the following London orchestras: London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Philharmonia and London Symphony Orchestra.

Other groups which occasionally joined the above orchestra in concerts are as follows: BBC Chorus; BBC Choral Society; Royal Choral Society; London Philharmonic Choir.

The programmes are largely arranged as follows: BBCSO concerts, London – BBCSO concerts, provinces – BBC Third Programme Concerts - Dvorak Commemoration Concerts. Within each of these, the programmes are arranged chronologically.
