The majority of programmes relate to performances given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Some of these programmes are from a series of “BBC Symphony Concerts” given at the Royal Albert Hall. There are programmes from concerts given at the People’s Palace. The collection includes programmes from a European tour of the orchestra in June 1947, which was conducted by Adrian Boult. These include programmes from the following venues: Théatre des Champs-Élysées [Paris]; Palais des beaux-arts, Brussels; Concertgebauw: Grote zaal; Kurhaus, Scheveningen [Netherlands] (not a programme, but a magazine listing the concert and music performed).
The BBC Theatre Orchestra is represented by a series of programmes from London and provincial concerts from March to May, 1947. These took place in the following venues: People’s Palace [London]; Town Hall, Oxford; Corn Exchange, Bedford; Winter Gardens, Eastbourne; Guildhall, Cambridge. The concerts were conducted by Walter Goehr.
At the end of the collection, there are programmes from a sequence of BBC Chamber Concerts, which were given in the Concert Hall at Broadcasting House.
The collection also contains a miscellaneous programme from a performance by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, given in the People’s Palace.
The collection is divided chiefly in the following order: BBCSO, BBCTO, BBC Chamber Concerts. Each of these is organised chronologically, except the BBCSO programmes, which are subdivided into Royal Albert Hall, People’s Palace then European Tour. Each of these subdivisions is organised chronologically.
