Collection Description

Collection Title
Sacred Harmonic Society (1852-1854)
A collection of one scrapbook of material from the Sacred Harmonic Society, 1852 to 1854. The collection contains programmes and performance ephemera including press cuttings, correspondence, rules of the society, tickets, miscellaneous pamphlets and reports. The collection includes 71 programmes from the Sacred Harmonic Society, as well as three programmes from performances by the Cologne Choral Union (variously called Cologne Union of Men’s Voices).

The programmes by the Sacred Harmonic Society relate to concerts given at Exeter Hall, which were conducted by Costa. The programmes are from concerts of large-scale choral works – often oratorios – and include repertoire by, for example, Handel and Mendelssohn. The collection also includes programmes from new choral works, for instance “Daniel” by J. Henry Griesbach and “Immanuel” by Henry Leslie.

There are three programmes and various press cuttings relating to performances by the Cologne Choral Union: these date from concerts given in June 1853. Two of the programmes are from concerts given at Exeter Hall, and one from a concert given at the Hanover Square Rooms. The concerts were under the direction of Franz Weber.

The collection is arranged chronologically, with all types of material relating to the same concert kept together.
